Swedish/Chilean Economic and Environmental Co-operation
Strategic Business Alliances between Chile and Sweden A tool in development, technology transfer and fruitful business for both parts.
How can one contribute to solve the environmental problems in Chile? How can this country access the information available about the alternatives and how to get the technology? How much does it cost? And finally.. Who will implement the selected solutions? Environmental problems disturb societies. A lot of times the authorities have the resources and know how to implement them, but they have to find somebody to execute plans. We try to find answers to these questions through the implementation of a new concept of international industrial co-operation: Environmental Strategic Alliances. We have linked Chilean businessmen/women interested in environmental issues with a number of Swedish "colleagues" with vast experience in the management of environment and reductions of pollution active in the fields of consultancy , manufacturing and production of equipment. We have organised joined technological missions visits to Sweden for authorities and businessmen/women as none of them alone are possibly going to resolve the environmental problems alone. More than 100 businessmen/women and Chilean authorities have visited Sweden, and more than 20 Swedish companies have visited Chile. Two pilot projects have already started in Chile ( Compost machines and car washing with water reciclement of water and washing fluids). 19 Swedish and Chilean companies have signed alliance agreements, 10 of them already have access to contributions of an amount of USD 65 000 for the training of the Chilean personnel, technology training and market liaison. Due to this programme, more than 35 Chilean technicians have had the opportunity to study in Sweden issues related to environmental solutions At the same time, the Swedish companies have the opportunity to introduce themselves to the Chilean market for many, an unknown and far away market.
Through this, we have contributed to the internalisation of companies from both countries. In this way we have fulfilled to the mandates of the Swedish Development Co-operation, where economic growth and the protection of the environment are two of the six basic objectives. Sida, Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency, finances the activities of this programme in Sweden. In Chile, CORFO does the same. EuroLatina AB, a consultancy firm specialised in technology transfer and industrial development in Latin America takes care of the implementation of this programme. In Chile INTEC-Chile is the co-ordinator of the local activities. Another Chilean institution, Fontec, has contributed by financing the Chilean Technical Missions to Sweden. Sida contributes through their program START SYD, carrying the costs of technology transfer from the Swedish companies to the Chilean ones.
There is plenty more to be done, but we know that the companies will continue with their contacts far longer than the end of our programme. This has been one of the other objectives; to establish strong and long lasting business relations for the benefit of both partners and sustainable environmental solutions.
